Cursive X
On this page, you will get free printable cursive X worksheets and a step-by-step guide on how to write both uppercase and lowercase cursive letter X.
How to Write X in Cursive
The cursive X is unique because it is one of the few letters that usually requires you to lift your pen to complete it. It’s essentially a slanted “back-to-back” curve or a crossed line.
How to Write Lowercase Cursive X
The lowercase x stays between the bottom baseline and the middle dashed line.
- Start on the bottom baseline and sweep up to the middle dashed line, then curve down to the right to hit the baseline (it looks like a slanted “n” hump or half an “m”).
- Finish with a small upward flick to the right.
- Lift your pen and draw a slanted line in the opposite direction, crossing through the center of your first stroke.
Mistakes to Avoid:
- Crossing too late: Just like the letter t, you should finish the whole word first, then go back and “cross your x’s.”
- Making it too vertical: The “cross” should follow the same slant as the rest of your writing.
How to Write Uppercase Cursive X
The uppercase X is large and decorative, filling the space from the baseline to the top line. There are two common ways to write it:
Method A: The “Back-to-Back” Curves
- Start at the top line, curve backward (to the left), and touch the bottom baseline.
- Lift your pen and start again at the top line (to the right of your first stroke).
- Curve inward to touch the first stroke at the middle dashed line, then curve out to the right to finish.
Method B: The Crossed Slant
- Start at the top line with a small decorative hook, and draw a long slant down to the bottom baseline.
- Lift your pen and draw a long diagonal line from the top right down to the bottom left.
Mistakes to Avoid:
- Leaving a gap: The two parts of the X must touch or cross at the middle dashed line.
- Confusion with “H”: Make sure the strokes cross in the middle; if they stay parallel, it will look like an uppercase H.
Frequently Asked Questions
Generally, no. Because the letter is made of two separate strokes, you usually lift your pen to finish it and then start the next letter separately.
Write the entire word first. Once the word is finished and your pen is at the end, go back and add the cross-stroke to any x in that word.
The “exit flick” from the very first stroke you made (the one on the baseline) is what connects to the next letter. You cross the letter after the whole word is connected.
